On January 1, 2020, coinciding with New Years Day, the cast and crew released the film’s first-look poster on their social media pages featuring Mohanlal riding a horse on a battlefield with a Happy New Year message written by Mohanlal.

On January 19, 2020, the cast and crew of the film released the character’s first poster featuring Keerthy Suresh as Aarcha on their social media pages. On January 21, 2020, the second character poster featuring Arjun Sarja as Anandan was featured on the film’s social media pages. Marakkar – Lion of the Arabian Sea is a Malayalam historical epic war film co-written and directed by Priyadarshan. Set in the 16th century, the film is based on the battle exploits of Kunjali Marakkar IV (Mohanlal), the naval chief of the Zamorin of Calicut, known for defending the Malabar coast against the Portuguese invasion. Kunjali Marakkars organized the first naval defense of the Indian coast defending the Portuguese invasion on the Malabar coast for almost a century. The film is scheduled for its theatrical release on August 12, 2021. At the 67th National Film Awards, the film won three awards: Best Feature Film, Best Special Effects, and Best Costume Design.

The script was co-written by Ani Sasi. The film was produced by Aashirvad Cinemas with Moonshot Entertainments and Confident Group serving as co-producers. The film stars Mohanlal in the title role, alongside Arjun, Suniel Shetty, Prabhu, Manju Warrier, Keerthy Suresh, Mukesh, Siddique, Pranav Mohanlal, and Nedumudi Venu in supporting roles. The film was originally scheduled to be released on March 26, 2020, along with its versions dubbed in the Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi languages. The release was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
